Tuesday 18. of May 2010

Big Picture Productions and Imagion AG announce the first European 3D Blu-ray “Grand Canyon Adventure”. Created by Academy Award®-nominated producers MacGillivray Freeman Films, this title will be available in German stores at the end of June through Eurovideo.

The final version of the first ever, 3D Blu-ray Disc was presented at the MEDIA TECH Global Expo in Frankfurt, May 18th, 2010.

Grand Canyon Adventure: River At Risk combines exhilarating river-rafting action on America’s most iconic river with the grandeur of the Grand Canyon to tell an engaging story of how ordinary people can make a difference for our parched planet—one that is running out of clean, fresh water.

Narrated by Robert Redford, with a stirring score, featuring songs and music from the Grammy Award®-winning Dave Matthews Band, the mood is set for this adventure that explores the issues, presents real solutions, and delivers an uplifting message of hope for future generations.

“One more time we wanted to demonstrate that we are market leaders in terms of innovation and quality. We are especially proud to be able to release such an outstanding film in the 3D Blu-ray format. ‘Grand Canyon Adventure’ was shot entirely in 1570 IMAX 3D film format. Along with our partners Ryan Mullins Big Picture Digital and Eurovideo, we are very happy to be the first ones to produce a commercially available European disc in the new format“, Michael Becker and Andreas Thran, CEOs of Imagion AG stated during the MEDIA TECH Expo.

MacGillivray Freeman’s Grand Canyon Adventure not only comes with 3D menus but also includes dynamicHD, our BD-Live solution, which is 100% compatible with the new 3D Blu-ray standard. Together with these breathtaking 3D images that were shot for 3D IMAX® theaters, this package amazingly presents the potential of the

3D Blu-ray format“, Michael Becker states.

“Our company has a global perspective when it comes to production and distribution. Our exclusive partnership with Imagion has allowed us once again to be on the forefront of a new format. We have been working in 3D for over 12 years, our 3D IMAX® library represents a significant part of the foundation of the modern 3D theatrical format. Consequently we have very high expectations and standards in regards to bringing this library to the 3D home video market. By this time next year, we expect to have the largest 3D live action catalogue released to market in the world.” - Ryan Mullins, President & CEO, Big Picture Digital Production Inc.

A remarkable number of 3D Blu-ray discs are already confirmed for production in 2010 including IMAX® 3D titles, which will stand out once again on 3D Blu-ray.

Big Picture founder sits on European Digital Entertainment 3D panel

Peve Conference – London. March 11-12th, 2010

Moderated by Tom Morrod, Head of TV Technology, Screen Digest and Ben Keen, Chief Analyst & Executive Director, Screen Digest; Ryan Mullins was asked to participate as an expert panelist at this year’s conference alongside Gerry O’Sullivan, Director of Strategic Product Development, BSkyB; Nick Sharples, Director Corporate Communications, Sony Europe; and Oliver Van Wynendaele, European Assistant GM, Consumer Products Division, Toshiba IS.

The hot topic presented to these industry giants: Blu-ray Disc and 3D content: the perfect combination? The discussion topics posed to the panel included: How close is the industry to establishing common standards for 3D at home? Could 3D prove to be Blu-ray’s killer app? A 3D theatrical release is becoming standard for big-ticket animation movies while consumer electronics companies are lining up to launch home 3D hardware.

On December 15th, 2009, the BDA (Blu-ray Disc Association) announced an industry- wide standard for hardware and content specifications, making Blu-ray the natural choice for in-home 3D content. Coming from the IMAX® business, Mullins was able to offer a unique perspective as a content expert with a history in 3D including 20 years of experience in the format.

Keeping the conversation somewhat informal and encouraging audience participation, the main questions for the panel were on how 3D works and the issues for producers to consider when bringing content into this format and more specifically, what to avoid. Mullins calls the conversion of 2D to 3D content a “necessary evil”. “Substandard source material is bound to be brought into the mix due to the initial lack of content that exists in 3D. We saw the same thing in the evolution of high definition TV without high definition disc formats to support it.”

Mullins himself will continue to be on the cutting edge, producing the first generation of 3D Blu-ray titles this year starting with Grand Canyon Adventure.
